What's Actually in an American Mahjong Set

A complete American mahjong set contains tiles, four racks with pushers, a reference card and dice. Tile counts run from 152 to 160 depending on how many jokers and blanks are included. Most sets sold as complete also include a playing mat and a carry bag, though neither is strictly required to play.

The confusion for new buyers is that "mahjong set" means different things in different listings. Some sellers mean tiles only. Others mean everything needed for four people to sit down and play.

Why Do Tile Counts Vary?

The base game uses 152 tiles: 108 suits, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers and 8 jokers. Sets described as 160 tiles include eight additional pieces, usually extra jokers, blanks, or a mixture.

Blanks serve two purposes. They replace a tile that goes missing, which happens to every set eventually, and some groups play them as additional wildcards under house rules. A set with no blanks becomes unplayable the day a tile disappears.

What Is Not Included That You Might Expect?

The current year's card

American mahjong hands change annually. Sets ship with a reference card, but competitive players buy the current National Mah Jongg League card separately each spring. For casual play at home, the card in the box is fine.

A table

Obvious, but worth stating because table size genuinely constrains the game. Four racks need roughly 34 inches square. See what size table you need.

Scoring chips or money

Some traditions play for small stakes with chips or coins. These are almost never included and are not required.

Do I Need the Mat and the Bag?

Neither is required to play. Both are the difference between a set you use and a set that stays in a cabinet.

The mat quiets the tiles, stops them sliding, and protects the table. The bag is what makes a set portable enough to take to someone else's house, which is how most groups actually play.
